What’s your Energy Signature?

Have you ever walked into a room and felt the mood of the room before anyone even said anything?

You know that feeling… Whether you walked into a room with your loved one, or into a conference room full of colleagues – you can sense the energy of the room can’t you?

You Know when your spouse or partner is upset, before they even open their mouth and say a word. Don’t you?

Or when you walk into an important meeting – you can sense the excitement or the impending bad news.

This is because we’re all big bundles of energy walking around.

Quantum Physics tells us that we’re all made up of the same stuff – energy.

When you boil us each down to our most minute subatomic particles, we’re all just a swirl of electrons, protons, and neutrons.

Some call this matter – some call this energy.

Albert Einstein schooled us all when he discovered that it’s all interchangeable… E=mc2

So what does this really mean? It means that, at the fundamental level, there really is no difference between energy and matter. One is equivalent to the other.

Which means we’re all swimming in the same soup. Made up of the same ingredients.

But what does this have to do with You?

And your leadership?


EVERYTHING actually.


Everything is made of energy.



The air we breathe.

The ground we walk on.

The food we eat.

Now, what helps make us each different and unique, is our energy signature.

I refer to this as your “presence.”

That sense of you, that people get from just being around you.

Technically, it’s the field of energy that is emanating out from the center of you.

And it is this field of energy that people pick up on – that they sense – through their mirror neurons in the premotor cortex of the brain.

The question to ask yourself is this…

What is the impact that your presence has on others when you walk into a room?

Does it light the room up and fill it with a sense of joy, cheerfulness, love or curiosity?


Or does it bring the energy and mood of the room down, with a feeling of negativity, sadness or anger?

Be really honest with yourself.

If it’s not what you would like it to be, then how can you change it?

How can you become like the Jedi Master who directs his or her energy with precision?

Because we each are made up of energy, it is our responsibility to learn how to consciously wield our energy.

Especially as a leader.

Learning how to be mindful of you impact on others with your energy is a powerful Jedi tool.

One that can inspire and empower others to follow you,

For good or for evil.

Depending on how you’re showing up each day.

As a leader, your job is to set the tone that others will follow. Regardless, of whether you are leading one person or hundreds or thousands.

Perhaps you’ve worked for a company where the CEO was a workaholic, always running on jet fuel and expected everyone else to do the same? Where the pressure to perform and work long hours was just “the norm” because that’s how everyone in the organization was operating. And “work-life” balance was just a thing people talked about but wasn’t actually the reality for most folks in the company.

This is because all energy vibrates at different frequencies. Negative thoughts, and emotions vibrate at lower frequencies, while positive thoughts and emotions vibrate at higher frequencies.

If we come back to quantum physics and string theory, we know that “Like attracts like,” which basically means that if you have someone with really strong energy, i.e. a big Presence (say the CEO) that is vibrating at lower, more negative energies, that person will naturally (and unconsciously) attract to him or her more of the same. They will surround themselves with others who are on a similar channel if you will.

The converse is true for someone who is vibrating at higher, more positive energy levels. Attracting to themselves, more positive people, situations and circumstances.

Take a moment to think about some of the great leaders that have inspired us like:

Martin Luther King or Gandhi or Malala Yousafzai (or Yoda ;)…

What is it about their energy, their presence that inspired us?

Kindness, compassion, wisdom, strength, and vision…


Versus those who sought to tear people down like:

Hitler or Bashar Al Assad (or Darth Vader)

Instilling with their presence hatred, violence, fear and division.


Social scientist tell us that only 7% of listening comprehension and communication come from spoken words, while 55% of comprehension comes from non-verbal cues such as body language, body posture, facial expressions, eye contact, spatial relations and energy.

Whether you realize it or not, when you’re leading a group, there is always someone watching you – your behaviors, your attitude, your language,

All of your energy cues are being noticed.

Your team is taking verbal and non-verbal cues from you on how to operate,

so what messages are you sending out through your energy, your presence?

If you’re not getting the results you need or want from your team, perhaps you need to take note of what your energy signature is conveying to others.

When you take time to consciously direct your energy in a way that supports the vision and work of your highest self, you will leave a powerful, positive impact on others and the world.
