Through my work with hundreds of people, I’ve discovered that our core values play an important role in the work we do and how we feel about it. The greater alignment a person has between their everyday work with their core values, the more happy and fulfilled they tend to be. The problem arises when aspects of their work are Not in alignment with those core values and thus creates stress and tension.

A person’s attitude toward their work can shift, often in an instant, when dynamics change due to corporate politics, personal or professional relationships or a myriad of other reasons. Often times, we’re not even aware that the issues that are causing us the most stress have to do with our values.

One way to check to see what might be underlying your stress levels is to ask yourself a few simple questions:

• What are my top five core values?
• How well are these values being honored or utilized in my everyday life? – rate yourself on a scale of 1-10
• Where is my work out of alignment with my values?

After answering these questions you can then make more conscious choices about what shifts, adjustments or changes you can make to bring more of your core values into play in everyday.

Your values are the voice of your authentic self. As you listen to this inner wisdom and take steps to honor it, you’ll notice how your stress levels go down and your levels of satisfaction and fulfillment go up.
